Soon after, he joined a Franciscan seminary and took his final vows in 1914.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBefore his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement devoted to Our Lady. He spread the Movement through missionary work in Japan and India. He fell ill during his travels and returned home to Poland in 1936. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was arrested and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn July 31, 1941, in retribution for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Maximilian offered himself in place of a young husband and father. He endured two weeks of torture before he was executed with an injection of carbolic acid. He was canonized on October 10, 1982.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Maximilian Kolbe is recognized today as the patron of those addicted to drugs. Unfortunately, Saint Benedict's discipline was so harsh that the monks sought to remove him by poisoning his kidneys with tainted drink and bread. The attempt failed and he escaped back to his mountain refuge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 529, he founded the monastery in Monte Cassino under the Rule of the Benedictine Order, which was to become the basis of rule for all western monasteries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe died in 543 and was canonized in 1220.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Benedict is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from kidney disease. He performed many miraculous healings by making the sign of the Cross until he became a plague victim himself. When Roch returned to town, he was arrested for being a spy and was jailed for five years. He never mentioned his noble connections and was cared for by an angel until his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe died in 1327 while still in prison and was canonized 100 years after his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Roch is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from a contagious disease. Germaine attended daily Mass and left her flocks to the care of her guardian angel. Although poverty-stricken, she shared her meager meals with the poor and taught simple catechism to the town children. Upon being accused of stealing bread during the cold winter, she opened her apron, and summer flowers tumbled out. Neighbors and her parents were awed and began to treat her as a holy person. Her parents invited her to rejoin the household, but Germaine chose to live as she had.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eShe died in 1601 and was canonized in 1867.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Germaine is recognized today as the patroness of the disabled.
