Soon after, he joined a Franciscan seminary and took his final vows in 1914.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBefore his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement devoted to Our Lady. He spread the Movement through missionary work in Japan and India. He fell ill during his travels and returned home to Poland in 1936. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was arrested and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn July 31, 1941, in retribution for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Maximilian offered himself in place of a young husband and father. He endured two weeks of torture before he was executed with an injection of carbolic acid. He was canonized on October 10, 1982.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Maximilian Kolbe is recognized today as the patron of those addicted to drugs. He was educated in Rome, but quickly became frustrated with the lack of discipline from the other students. He decided to remove himself by moving to a mountain cave near Subiaco and living as a hermit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis dedication to God was so respected that the monks of a neighboring monastery asked him to be their abbot. Unfortunately, Saint Benedict's discipline was so harsh that the monks sought to remove him by poisoning his kidneys with tainted drink and bread. The attempt failed and he escaped back to his mountain refuge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 529, he founded the monastery in Monte Cassino under the Rule of the Benedictine Order, which was to become the basis of rule for all western monasteries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe died in 543 and was canonized in 1220.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Benedict is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from kidney disease. They obtained his birth by prayers and a promise to give to God the child He would grant them. Miraculously, Roch was born with a red cross on his chest, the sign of a very particular predestination.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOrphaned at age 20, Roch joined the Third Order of Saint Francis and cared for victims of the plague in Rome, Italy. He performed many miraculous healings by making the sign of the Cross until he became a plague victim himself. Roch returned to Montpellier and retreated into the forest to die, but instead was befriended by a dog who brought him food until he recovered. When Roch returned to town, he was arrested for being a spy and was jailed for five years. He never mentioned his noble connections and was cared for by an angel until his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe died in 1327 while still in prison and was canonized 100 years after his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Roch is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from a contagious disease. His feast day is August 16th.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Roch, Pray for Us.",

At the age of 30, he converted to Catholicism and gave his life to God. He joined the Servite Order and dedicated his life to caring for the sick, poor, and marginalized. Peregrine practiced a penance of standing instead of sitting whenever possible. Years of this extreme wear resulted in varicose veins, which eventually broke down into open, running sores. At age 60, he was diagnosed with cancer in his leg.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe night before his leg was to be amputated, Peregrine dragged himself before the crucifix and begged the crucified Lord to heal him. Falling into a deep, trance-like sleep, Peregrine saw Jesus lean down from the cross to touch his leg. He awoke the following morning to find his sores completely healed and his cancer cured.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe died on May 1, 1345 and was canonized on December 27, 1726.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Peregrine is recognized today as the patron of those who suffer from cancer. A chain is not included.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Charles was born in 1538 in the castle at Arona, on Lake Maggiore, Italy. He was the son of a rich Italian count and Margaret Medici, sister of Pope Pius IV. In 1560, Charles' papal uncle named him Secretary of State and made him a cardinal and administrator of the see of Milan. At this time, Charles was not yet a priest. He was finally ordained a priest in 1563 and was consecrated bishop of Milan the same year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy wise laws, by gentle kindness and by his own marvelous example, Saint Charles made his diocese a model for the whole Church. He faithfully prayed and did penance, gave everything he owned to the poor, went into debt to feed the hungry, and set up altars in the streets to bring Mass to the ill. In 1571, the whole province suffered from a terrible famine. Charles worked with unceasing toil to help the starving and those with stomach ills due to the food shortage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe died in 1584 and was canonized in 1610.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Charles is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from stomach ailments. His feast day is November 4th.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaint Charles Borromeo, Pray for Us.\u003c\/p\u003e",

During the era of the new Church, he preached in Jerusalem and at Ephesus. She came into the world with a deformed hand and the disease of scrofula, and, while yet an infant, lost her mother. Her father remarried but his new wife abused and neglected Germaine. She was often forced to sleep in the stable, was fed on scraps, and was employed almost from infancy as a shepherdess.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile tending the flock, she spent much of her time praying the rosary. Germaine attended daily Mass and left her flocks to the care of her guardian angel. Although poverty-stricken, she shared her meager meals with the poor and taught simple catechism to the town children. Upon being accused of stealing bread during the cold winter, she opened her apron, and summer flowers tumbled out. Neighbors and her parents were awed and began to treat her as a holy person. Her parents invited her to rejoin the household, but Germaine chose to live as she had.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eShe died in 1601 and was canonized in 1867.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Germaine is recognized today as the patroness of the disabled. She stood firm in her faith and refused to give up during the painful ordeal of having her teeth smashed with pincers and then knocked out. The persecutors then told her that if she did not deny Jesus, she would be thrown into a raging fire. Rather than deny her faith in Jesus, she jumped into the burning fire herself. When the pagans saw how heroic she was, many were converted to Christianity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Apollonia is recognized today as the patroness of those who suffer from dental disease or toothaches. He felt deep remorse, renounced his profession and at the age of 36, he entered the Theatine Order, taking the name of Andrew out of love for the cross.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Andrew eventually became the superior of the congregation and was instrumental in establishing a number of Theatine religious houses in Italy. He was so successful in converting sinners and heretics with his eloquent preaching that numerous disciples thronged around him, eager to be under his spiritual guidance. One day, when beginning the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, he suffered a stroke that resulted in his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe died in 1608 and was canonized in 1712.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Andrew Avellino is recognized today as the patron of those who have suffered a stroke.
